What Is VIN Verification and Who Needs It
VIN verification is a required process when registering a vehicle in Florida that was previously titled or registered in another state. It confirms that the vehicle identification number (VIN) physically matches the information shown on the title or registration documents.
This verification is commonly required for new Florida residents, as well as for individuals registering out-of-state vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, trailers, and other eligible vehicles. During the process, the VIN is inspected directly on the vehicle, and the official Form HSMV 82042 is completed.
VIN verification is a mandatory step for Florida tax collectors and tag agencies before a vehicle can be registered or titled in the state.
